Charles Wesley Bowens, son of Kidd and Blanche Bowens, was born on March 27, 1944 in the State of New York. He departed this life on March 4, 2019 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.

Charles was a veteran of the United States Army and served for twenty (20) years. He saw action with the 4th Infantry Division in the Demilitarized Zone (DMV) and the Central Highlands; and as a Battalion Advisor to a South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) battalion in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. He commanded the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was the recipient of a Purple, as well as five Bronze Stars, four Air Medals of Valor, and a Presidential Unit Citation. Charles ultimately became Chief, of Security and Law Enforcement, for the North Atlantic Division. He retired with the rank of Major on November 1, 1985. Additionally, he was a General in the DC Defense Force.

Charles was active in many civic and social organizations, namely, Fraternal Order of Police, the Shriners, and the Order of Feather Fraternity. He was also a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 50 years, Patricia Bowens; daughter Nichole Bowens; one grandson Alec Bowens; sister Lynn Bowens; two aunts Maudry McCullough and Mary Ann Howard; two nieces Tracey Bessellieu and Adia Ringgold; a nephew Shawn Ringgold; a brother-in-law Anthony (Jewel) Ringgold; great-nephew Skylar Ringgold and a dear friend William (Billy) Artope; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
