Mary M. “Marg” Jones of 2435 Walden Road died March 15, 2005 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City after a brief illness. She was 85.

Marg was born October 31, 1919 the daughter of John E. “Jack” & Florence (Hoyt) Danahey in Quincy, Illinois. She graduated from Barry High School in Barry, Illinois in 1936 and briefly attended college.

She was the executive secretary for the manager of Marshall Fields in Chicago, Illinois until her marriage to Lawrence S. Jones of Barry, Illinois on July 20,1946. They were married 53 years and raised two daughters in Barry and then in Davenport, Iowa.

After her husband’s death in 2000, Marg lived in Iowa City and was a tireless volunteer for Iowa City Road Races, University Athletic Club and the Friends of Lake Macbride.

She is survived by her sister Alice Lewton of Pueblo West, Colorado, her daughter Marynel and son-in-law Jerry Corton of Baraboo, Wisconsin and her daughter Laurie and son-in-law John Canady of Iowa City, two grandsons Frank and Adam Canady of Iowa City and a sister in law, Marilyn Barnes & her husband Robert of Barry. Her brother Bud preceded her in death.

Marg is best remembered as the first woman to run for the school board in Barry, Illinois and the fact that she started the Head Start and subsequently the kindergarten program there. She was also the oldest living member of the Barry Baptist Church and was the Superintendent of Sunday School there for many years. She also served as president of the Barry PTA. Marg enjoyed reading and playing bridge with friends and her family.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Barry, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Barry Baptist Church Barry, Illinois. Arrangements with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa, 52240.
