J. Fred Doornbos, M.D., 89, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.

Funeral Services will be at 10 am Monday, October 22nd, at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle officiating and Rev. Ken Royar assisting. Entombment will be at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, October 21st at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd, Coralville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

John Frederick Doornbos was born on November 18, 1928 in Ottawa, KS, the son of Floyd and Clial (Hamilton) Doornbos. Raised in El Dorado, KS, Fred married Vera Joann Boone in 1950, before serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War. They later divorced. He moved to Iowa City in 1986, where he married Shirley Kern on November 21, 1986.

Fred received his bachelor’s degree and later his medical degree in 1957 from the University of Kansas. He started his medical practice as a General Practice Physician in El Dorado, KS. In 1970 he moved to Wichita, KS where he received his degree in Radiology from Wesley Medical Center. In 1972, he moved to Houston, TX where he received his degree as a radiation oncologist from M.D. Anderson Hospital in 1975. Fred was a Radiation Oncologist for 43 years starting in Wichita, Kansas and then moving to Iowa City. He retired in 1998, after 13 years as a Radiation Oncologist at UIHC.

He was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved to be active in the community. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir. Fred was a member of the University of Iowa Retiree Association, Johnson County Medical Society, American College of Radiology, Amber Society of Therapeutic Radiologists and Oncologists and Gilbert Fletcher Society. He was an avid gardener, especially loved growing roses and orchids, and enjoyed couples bridge for couples at Mercy. He was an active member of the Republican party.

Fred is survived by his wife of 32 years, Shirley; his children, Daniel (Mary Beth) Doornbos, M.D. of Windsor, Maine, Suzanne (David) Kerbow of Chicago, IL, and William (Melanie) Doornbos of DeWitt, IA; his stepchildren, Margaret “Peg” Young of Bellevue, WA, Pamela (Jim) Risoleo of Paradise Valley, AZ, Michael (Karin) Crippen of Chapel Hill, NC, Rebecca(Tom) Paintin of Iowa City, Cynthia (Johnny) Tygart of Broken Arrow, OK, and Mark (Kathryn) Crippen of Phoenix, AZ; his sister, Mary Jane (Marvin) Burtin of El Dorado, KS; brother-in-law, Robert Lamb of Whitewater, KS; his grandchildren, Katie, John, Caitlin, Kendra, Taylor, Justin, Brandon, Teddy, Christian, Elizabeth, Cathy, Lauren, Aimee, Sara, David, Joseph, Joshua, Matthew, Reid and Julia; eight great-grandchildren and two expectant great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, John Frederick Doornbos Jr. and sister, Clial Mae Lamb.
