Thomas “Tom” Norman Plath, 82, of Iowa City, died on October 14 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am, Thursday, October 18 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7pm on Wednesday, October 17 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City where a rosary will be recited at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be sent to Camp Courageous.

Tom was born on September 22, 1936 in Newell, Iowa, son of Norman and Bernice. He graduated from Anamosa Community Schools in 1955. He married Janice Ann Houser on August 9, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anamosa, IA and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

He retired on March 1, 1986 after 30 years with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.
He was a former president of the Iowa City Telephone Pioneers, past board and member of the Iowa City Home Builders Association, and Sunrise Optimist Club. Tom was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, volunteered at Mercy Hospital with over 3000 hours of service, and was an avid Hawkeye fan.

Whenever asked about his health, Tom’s standard answer would be “Just ducky.”
Tom adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Ann; his children: Randy (Debbie) Plath of Phoenix, AZ, Pamela (Kirk) Emerson of Anamosa, IA and daughter-in-law Debra Plath of Iowa City, IA; seven grandchildren: Danielle, Shanna, Stacey, Tanya, Michael, Cody and Mark; nine great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Sam, Alison, Ethan, Kelsi, Layla, Paisley, Hannah, and Deslie; and his brother, Robert Plath.

He is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Bernice Plath, son, Todd Plath, sister-in-law, Beverly Plath, and brothers-in-law: Michael Houser, Don Ceynar and Robert Reese.
