Joy R. Charbonneaux, 96, of Iowa City and formerly of Burlington, died Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County.

Joy was born May 29, 1922 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Ft. Madsion, Iowa to Elba and Ruth (Sharp) Thompson of rural Denmark. She graduated from Denmark High School, attended Iowa Wesleyan, and taught school briefly before joining the women's branch of the US Naval Reserve (WAVES), where she served from 1943-1946 during WWII. She married Franz Charbonneaux on December 26, 1952; he passed away in 1969. Joy worked as an executive secretary for 38 years for Mason & Hanger-Silas Mason, Co., retiring in 1988. She was a voracious reader and was active in politics earlier in her life.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Waterman of Iowa City; step-daughters, Joyce Butler of Mediapolis, Yvonne Gray of Gladstone, Illinois and Leola Ulrich of Naples, Florida; three grandchildren, Paul Waterman, Elijah Waterman and Anna Waterman, all of the Coralville/Iowa City area; 15 step-grandchilren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother William, her husband Franz and a step-son Franz Charbonneaux, Jr.

Her family will greet friends Sunday, September 23rd, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Prugh Funeral Service in Burlington, Iowa.

Private burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Lee County, Iowa.

Instead of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to The Burlington Public Library or The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County.
