F. T. Carl, a resident of Johnson county for almost half a century, passed away at his home in Lone Tree Friday morning, in his eighty-second year. He had been in failing health for several years and suffered a stroke of paralysis, which hastened the end.
Frederick T. Carl was born in LeGrange county, Indiana, on April 18, 1837, and died January 31, 1919, aged 81 years 9 months 13 days. When he was but eighteen months of age, his parents moved to Cedar county, Iowa, settling on a farm near Tipton, where he grew to manhood. He was one of a family of ten children. One sister, Mrs. Newton Roberts, being the only one surviving.
Mr. Carl came to Johnson county in 1875 and settled on a farm just north of Lone Tree where he resided for about twenty years. He then moved to Lone Tree where he later entered the clothing business, which occupation he followed for about thirteen years, retiring from business in January 1909.
In 1855, Mr. Carl was first married to Emiline Soper, a native of New York. She died in 1880. Eight children were born to this union, as follows: Minerva, now Mrs. William Donham of Nichols; James R. of Farragut, Iowa; Dr. F. F. Carl of Nichols; Lucina, now Mrs. Henry Colbert of Fremont township; Addie, now Mrs. G. V. Baker of Lone Tree; Elard of Unionville, Missouri; Evan D. of Lone Tree; and one son who died in infancy.
In 1887, Mr. Carl was again married to Ava C. Farnam, a native of Maine. Two children were born to them. Both are deceased. The mother also died in 1890.
On May 3, 1898, Mr. Carl was married to Lily A. Brown, of Burlington, a native of England. One daughter, Miriam, was born to them. She and her mother still survive.
Mr. Carl served as mayor of Lone Tree four terms and has held other offices of trust and honor during his long residence in this community. He was of a cheerful disposition and had a large circle of friends.
Besides the wife and eight children, Mr. Carl leaves twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
His funeral was held from the M.E. church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. J. F. Barnett. Burial was in the Lone Tree cemetery.
