Helen Frances Thuerauf, 98, of Iowa City, formerly of Solon, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at Hallmark Care Center, Mt. Vernon.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2005 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City. Burial will be held in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Solon. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 27, 2005 at Brosh Chapel, Solon, were there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.

She was born December 26, 1906 in Bertram, the daughter of Edward and Helen Frances Vislisel Hudachek. She married John E. Thuerauf, December 28, 1927, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Lisbon.

Helen was a homemaker for many years. She also was a baker at Regina High School in Iowa City for over 13 years. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Alter and Rosary Society, and their Bible Study. She was also a member of the Solon Booster Club.

She is survived by a son, David (Ann) Thuerauf of Mt. Vernon, Paul (Theresa) Thuerauf of Willcox, Arizona, two daughters, Mary Ann Hotka of River Falls, Wisconsin, and Sister Jean Thuerauf, Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sister Lillian Krummel of Mt. Vernon, 19 grandchildren, 34 greatgrandchildren, and 6 greatgreatgrandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, John, who died December 6, 1959, brothers, William, Lewis, Daniel, Lafe, Paul, and Edward. Her sisters, Elsie Walshire, Christine Krummel, a son, Bernard Thuerauf, a daughter, Patricia Spychaj, who died Sunday, February 20, 2005. A grandson, Joseph Thuerauf and a son-in-law, Wesley Hotka.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Helen was the light of 2nd Avenue as she invited everyone to share her beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens. She also will be remembered for her wonderful Bohemian kolaches and sisky. Helen’s open door was a sign of her kind hospitality. Her love and devotion to her faith was never doubted by anyone. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her rosaries for the needs of family and friends is what got us through difficult times. She sent her visitors off with little brown sacks of candy, hugs, and kisses.
