Kenneth C. Moore, 74, died Sunday, April 29, 2018.
A Memorial Gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday, May 13 from 3 PM to 5 PM at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. There will be an opportunity to share memories at 4:30 PM In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for a scholarship fund in honor of Ken’s life may be directed to Sherry Moore.
Survivors include Sherry, his wife of 50 years, and their son, KC, of Phoenix, AZ; his sister, Sue Mack of Folsom, CA; step-brother, Jody Tarango and step-sister, Diane Prim, both of Phoenix; and his yorkies, Charlie and Sophie.
Ken was born May 21, 1943 in Long Beach, California, the son of Forrest and Lillian Williams Moore. On September 2, 1967 Ken married Sharon Sweetland in Garden Grove, CA. He attended Harbor Junior College, then received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from California State University at Long Beach, and his Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa in 1971. In association with Iowa’s Biochemistry faculty, Ken developed the Central Electron Microscopy Research Facility (CEMRF) in 1973. In 1979 this became a university-wide resource under the auspices of the Office of the Vice President for Research. In his role as Director of the Microscopy Lab, he and his staff collaborated with faculty on as many as 200 research projects annually. He taught six courses each year, collaborated on research grants involving ocular melanoma and cystic fibrosis, and authored or co-authored numerous scientific research articles. Ken represented the University of Iowa and Iowa City throughout the United States and in Japan, China, Venezuela, Brazil, Canada and Europe. He also served as an international lecturer for professional scientific organizations, consulted on microscopy resources at U.S. and foreign universities, and contributed to the development of instrumentation for companies such as DuPont, Emitech, and Hitachi.
Ken served two terms as President of the University Staff Council and was a founding member of committees which established University of Iowa’s Women in Science and Engineering program and the Iowa Technology Transfer Council. Ken was the recipient of a University of Iowa Excellence Award and a Reagents’ Award for Outstanding Contributions to the University and the State of Iowa. After 32 years of service to the University of Iowa, Ken retired in 2010. Ken was an advocate and a mentor for young people. Throughout his long career, Ken enthusiastically introduced students, from kindergarten through graduate school, to the wonder of science. In his retirement, Ken continued to befriend and encourage the young people in his life. In addition to his loving family and his contributions to the expansion of scientific knowledge, Kenneth Moore has left a legacy of those whose lives are richer for having known him.
