Janice Ann Denehy, 74, of Iowa City, died Friday, April 20, 2018, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics from complications following a heart attack.

Jan was born February 28, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, to Jack and Ruth (Ruppenthal) Cessford and grew up with three siblings: Cheryl, John, and Joan. She attended college at Andrews University in Michigan and earned her nursing degree at Loma Linda University in California, She married her husband, Jerry, during his training in dental school. After moving to Iowa City in 1968, she completed her MA in the Nursing of Children, followed by her PhD in Educational Psychology at the University of Iowa. She retired as an Associate Professor after teaching in the College of Nursing for thirty-four years. Following retirement, she served as the executive editor of the Journal of School Nursing for fourteen years, during which time she wrote over fifty editorials.

Jan’s nursing research was varied though her primary focus involved the classification and identification of nursing taxonomy. Her research projects resulted in scholarly production of twenty articles, six books, and fifteen book chapters. She was in demand as a speaker at state, national, and international nursing meetings. Jan received numerous honors throughout her professional career including awards in writing and teaching at both the university and national level.

Jan’s hobbies included achieving Master Gardener status, working on a variety of gardening projects, and serving as editor of the Thymes, the Johnson County Master Gardener Newsletter. She spent much time in her yard and the adjacent woods working with hostas and wildflowers. She was also a longtime member of the Iowa City New Horizons Band, playing baritone. She belonged to the brass Polka Dots group, which performs regularly at rest homes and family gatherings. She recently compiled a photo and biographical directory of the band members.

Jan was an artist, a calligrapher, and a seamstress who loved to utilize her creative talents with her children and grandchildren, who were the loves of her life. Jan had a passion for tennis playing on the Alley Cats team for many years. She was also involved in the lives of many international graduate students that her husband taught at the College of Dentistry. These relationships provided the opportunity for her and Jerry to tour many areas of the world together and experience a variety of cultures with international friends.

Janice is survived by her husband, Jerry; children, Christine (Eric) Enderle of Williamstown, MA, Mike (Katie) Denehy of Columbia, MO, and Allison (Noel) Schaeffer of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren, Savion, Jack, Charlotte, Alex, and Graysen; and many extended family members.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John.

The family will greet friends Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. An informal service will begin at 3:00 PM. Memorial donations may be directed to the Friends of Iowa City New Horizons Band, Inc. (FICNHB)
