2 March 1911 - West Branch Times

J. H. Secrest died at his home at Iowa City at 9:15 Sunday morning. The funeral services were held at the home at one o'clock Tuesday, conducted by Dr. Rollo Hurlburt, after which the remains were taken to the cemetery east of Downey, where it was laid beside his son who preceded him several years ago. In his death, Johnson county loses one of its old settlers as well as a most highly respected and honored citizen. He was born in Gurnsey county Ohio, August 9, 1848, and was sixty-three years of age at the time of his death. He came to Iowa when twenty years of age and engaged in farming and stock raising in which he was most successful. January 15, 1873, he was married to Miss Esther Holingsworth, who with six children are left to mourn his loss. The children are Guy of near Downey, Charles of Iowa City, Mrs. Edna Ney of West Liberty, Mrs. Mary Dunn of Stratford, S. Dak. and the Misses Carrie and Florence at home. Heartfelt sympathy will be extended to the bereaved family by a wide circle of friends.
