22 June 1933 - West Branch Times

Carol Pownall, 6, daughter of Professor and Mrs. Fred Pownall, of Iowa City, was killed Monday afternoon when she was struck by a car driven by Berne Enslin of Washington, Ia., University of Iowa summer student.

Enslin rushed the child to Mercy hospital, but she died before he reached there. Enslin was confined at the hospital, near a nervous breakdown as a result of shock.

The accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. shortly after the little girl left her home to cross the street to play with the children of Dr. H. H. Jacobsen. Enslin said that she ran into the street from behind a bush as he was gathering momentum for a steep hill. The child had two older sisters, Dorothy and Eleanor.

Professor Pownall is university editor, assistant professor of journalism and director of student publications at the University.

A graduate of the university, he was editor of the Des Moines Capital before it was merged with the Des Moines Tribune and subsequently was director of the bureau of accuracy and fair play of the Register and Tribune, before accepting the position at the university.

Mrs. Pownall formerly was employed by Des Moines newspapers, and is the sister of Ted Ashby of the staff of The Des Moines Tribune.

Coroner George Maresh declared the accident was unavoidable and no inquest would be held. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Hohenschuh mortuary at Iowa City. The Rev. M. Willard Lampe, director of the University of Iowa school of religion, officated at the rites.

Mr. Pownall's mother, Mrs. Kate Pownall of Centerdale, and his two sisters, Misses Bertha and Eleanor Pownall, were summoned to Iowa City by the sad accident, and other relatives and friends from this vicinity attended the funeral services.
