Donna Pauline (Redfern) Maas

A celebration of life for Donna Maas, 86, of Kalona, formerly of Iowa City, will be held Monday, November 21, 2016 at 10:30 am at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Erling Shultz and Distric Superintendent Reverend Leah Pogemiller officiating. Burial will follow at the Sharon Center United Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 20, 2016 from 4-7 pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Parkinson's Disease Research and Iowa City Hospice. Donna Maas died Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Donna Pauline (Redfern) Maas was born April 10, 1930 in Yarmouth, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth and Ida Pauline (Carlson) Redfern. She graduated from Yarmouth High School and Grinnell College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Donna taught K-12 music in the Montezuma School District for several years. She was united in marriage to Meredith Maas Jr. on September 18, 1953 in the Yarmouth Methodist Church. Donna taught piano lessons and worked at the University of Iowa as a transcriptionist for 12 years. Donna was a member of the Sharon Center United Methodist Church where she belonged to the UMW and directed the choir for 48 years. She was also a member of the OptiMrs, Order of the Easter Star, Corona Chapter, Johnson County Farm Bureau and the Idris Club and Alpha Club of Kalona. Donna enjoyed music, gardening, sewing and other crafts.
Survivors include her son Randy Maas of Keystone, IA., Marjorie (Tracy) McArtor of Riverside, IA., three grandchildren: Shannon Adams, Allison McArtor, and Mallory McArtor, six great grandchildren: Katilynn, Skyler, Hailee, Dylan, Liam and Amelia and one sister Phyllis (Loren) Allen.
Preceding Donna in death were her parents, her husband Meredith Jr. and a sister Rita Redfern.
