Robert Ralph Hochstedler was born at Kalona, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Iva Miller Hochstedler. He was raised in the community and attended Boone School.
He served in WWII in the Army Air Force as a tail gunner and turret gunner on B 25's. His outfit was the Green Dragons and they saw action in New Guinea. He received the Purple Heart for his service.
Robert and Mary Miller were married on December 24, 1944 in Iowa City.
Bob was a truck driver and later a plant operator for Stevens Sand and Gravel Company of Iowa City. After retirement Bob and Mary spent their winters in Mesa, AZ, for 17 enjoyable years. Fishing was a hobby that he enjoyed with Hank and Mel.
Bob was a life member of both the Richmond AMVET Post #107, and was a council member of the Hills City Council.
Survivors are his wife, Mary of Hills, two children and spouses; Jerry and Judy Hochstedler of Portland, Ore, and Bonnie and Don Yeggy of Riverside, IA. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and spouses, Leslie and Jason Chown, Samantha Whittaker, Stephanie Pagel, Ron and Kristi Yeggy, Jerry Yeggy and friend, Jodi Hill, Scott and Mandy Yeggy and Neil Hochstedler and fiance Jennifer Breshears, thirteen great grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law, Odena Hostetler and Maxine Miller.
Preceding Bob in death were his parents, and infant son, Gene Robert and brothers, Omer H. Levis H. Monroe H. and Raymond (Hosty) Hochstedler.
A memorial fund for the Hills Volunteer Fire Department has been established.
The family wishes to acknowledge the many acts of kindness that have been extended to them during Bob's illness and at this time of their loss. You will be remembered with love, always.
