Leora M. Ressler
Leora M. Ressler was born in Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Leon and Fern Grout Southwick. She attended Kalona High School. At the age of 18 she was married to Howard Ressler. The couple operated the Sharon Center grocery store for several years, moved to Cedar Rapids and ran a grocery store there, where Richard the son they lost was born. From there they went to Minneapolis, where they ran a boarding house. Pat was born in Minneapolis. Leora worked very hard in the boarding house with many adventures and stories to be told. They moved to California. Leora worked in their grocery store before becoming a nurses' aid, which she was so gracious at doing. She and Howard always had an open door for visitors and made everyone feel at home and comfortable.
Leora had a special affinity for the homeless. Survivors are two daughters, Patricia Kennedy of Sacramento, CA., and Sherry Dence of San Carlos, CA., one grandson, Matthew Dence, San Carlos, CA., one sister, Katheryn Kos of Kalona, five brothers and sisters-in-law, Bert and Virginia Southwick, San Carlos, CA., Keith and Vickie Southwick, Sunnyvale, CA., Don Southwick and Ruth, Hayward, WS., Robert and Norma Southwick, Kalona, IA., and Leon Southwick, New Orleans, LA. and one sister-in-law Rheta Southwick, Riverside, IA. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
Leora was preceded in death by her husband, Howard on September 21, 1985, an infant son, Richard, her sister Hazel Aleo and her brother Dale.
A memorial fund for the Salvation Army is established in lieu of flowers.
