OLDEST PIONEER CALLED BEYOND

Frederick W. Hemsted, Johnson county’s oldest settler, passed away this morning, at 5:30 o’clock, at his home in Newport township.

He was 95 years, 1 month and 13 days of age, and had lived in this community many years, occupying his present home, 39 years.

Mr. Hemsted had lived in Johnson county not quite so long as some of the local pioneers, having come hither in 1844, but as to longevity, his more than 95 years gave him the leadership in that point of distinction. He was a native of Pennsylvania.

Surviving are his wife and 10 children - seven of his first wife and three of his present wife. There are also 31 grandchildren, 30 great grand children and 1 great grandchild. Thus he has 72 immediate descendants - and extraordinary record, truly.

Mr. Hemsted was a victim of a complication of ailments, super-induced by grip.
The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, from the late residence. Rev C.C. Rowilson will conduct the services. The interment will be in Morse cemetery.

A host of friends will mourn, for Johnson county has lost a splendid pioneer, on the good and brave representatives of an early day, when sacrifice and serviced blazed the trail and paved the way to modern growth, prosperity and the culture of a university era.
