27 March 1930 - West Branch Times

Mrs. Mary F. Watson, 75, a pioneer of this vicinity, died Sunday morning at the home of her son, Mr. Grover C. Watson of 111 South Lucas street, Iowa City.

She was born October 8, 1854, in Marow, O., and came to Iowa when one year old, with her parents, John and Rachel Dilatush. The family settled near Marengo, but because of the death of her grandfather, who died while crossing on the ferry at Keokuk, and because of the ill health of her mother, the family returned to Ohio.

Four years later, when Mrs. Watson was five years old, the family came to Iowa again, by covered wagon. They settled on highway No. 32, 10 miles east of Iowa City. She was married to J. S. Watson, February 22, 1877, and has lived in this vicinity since.

She is survived by her husband, who was formerly Johnson county treasurer, and two sons, Grover C. Watson, assistant cashier of the Iowa City Savings bank and Elbert B. Watson, an architect at Norfolk, Nebr. Another son, John N., was killed in a wreck several years ago.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Hohenschuh mortuary, with the Rev. Guy H. Findley in charge. Burial was made in the cemetery at Downey.
