August W. “Augie” Salm, 93, died peacefully Saturday, December 30, 2017.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday, January 5th at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Very Reverend Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church or Keystone Memory Care in North Liberty.

Augie was born July 21, 1924 in Harper, Iowa, the son of August and Elizabeth Sondag Salm. He was a graduate of Harper High School and attended Denver University. Augie served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a belly gunner and achieved the rank of Corporal. On June 27, 1950 Augie married Phyllis Peiffer in Harper, Iowa.

For 33 years, Augie was a Bulk Mail Tech for the United States Postal Service and administered the Civil Service Exam. Prior to that Augie worked at Amana Refrigeration and the Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church, the Knights of Columbus, AARP and the NARFE.

Augie loved to drive and travel with Phyllis. Most important to him was his wife, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his five children; Diana (Tary) Werts of Cheyenne, WY, Jean (Bill) Cooney of Thornton, CO, Terrance (Ellen) Salm of Vero Beach, FL, Randall (Denise) Salm and Jeffrey (Tina) Salm, both of Iowa City; 11 grandchildren, Christina, Andrew, Michelle, Jeremiah, Stacey, Tiffany, Kelli, Molli, Sebastian August “Auggie”, Brooke and Brittany; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Jackson, Jacob, Joseph, Jake, Makayla, Allison, Addison, JD, Lincoln, Kaleb, Abigail, Rylin, Maximus, Myles and Willow; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Bower and Marian Emmack; daughter-in-law Janice Salm and son-in-law Douglas Herdliska; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2017, his son, Thomas and daughter, Shirley Herdliska, daughter-in-law, Tamra Salm, grandson, Matthew and numerous other family members.
