Clarence A. Carlson, 91, of Iowa City, formerly of Livermore, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Private burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa. The family will greet friends Friday, December 15th from 3:00 to 6:30 pm at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A Masonic Service will begin at 6:30pm, with military rites following the Masonic service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, P.O. Box 10704, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52410 or United Methodist Church in Livermore, Iowa.

Clarence was born July 13, 1926 in Paullina, Iowa, the son of Hans and Anna (Lochner) Carlson. Growing up in Meriden, Iowa, he graduated from Meriden High School in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy – serving as a 2nd Class radioman from 1944 to 1946 in World War II.

He married Mardella Denny November 25, 1951 in Hartley, Iowa. The couple made their home and raised their family in Livermore, Iowa from 1957 until 1985.

Clarence was a livestock buyer for Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for 30 years – retiring in 1984. He served as Councilman and Mayor of Livermore for 20 years. He held leadership positions with the Livermore United Methodist Church serving as Lay Leader and Treasurer.
Clarence was an active member of the Livermore Lions Club for more than 25 years acting as chairperson of many committees and President. Moving to Iowa City in 1985, he was a patient transport driver for UIHC and later worked as a courier for Hills Bank & Trust – retiring at age 85!

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, Iowa City United Methodist Men, Iowa City Masonic Lodge No. 4, Coralville American Legion and University I Club.

Clarence was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending home, away, and bowl games. He loved traveling and vacationing throughout the world. Clarence’s hobbies included fishing, woodworking and ballroom dancing. Nothing made him happier than to spend time with family and friends celebrating life’s events. It can be said there were no strangers in his presence. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, and within minutes, they would be considered friends.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years Mardella; daughters, Debra (David) Nelson of Baltimore, MD and their son Brian Nelson; Terri (Jim) Foley of Holland, MI and Peggy (Joe) Marchini of DeKalb, IL and their daughters Madeline Marchini and Clara Marchini.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harry and a sister Rose Benston.
