Robert Cryder, 95 died Monday, November 20, 2017 in Prior Lake, Minnesota at his home.

The memorial service, led by Rev. Dr. Sam Massey, will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation time for friends and family will be an hour before the service at the Funeral Home. Burial will be after the service at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice and The First Presbyterian Church.

Bob was born May 25, 1922, to John and Helen (Barnes) Cryder in Joliet, Illinois. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and graduated from Joliet Junior College. He went on to earn two master degree’s; one in Library Science from the University of Chicago and one in History from The University of Illinois. Bob married Joanne Sloan in 1953 and spent 59 years of happiness together until 2012, when Joanne passed away.

Bob worked in the education department for the University of Illinois and the University of Washington for years before moving to Iowa City in 1965, where he proudly cheered on the Iowa Hawkeye’s. He thrived as the Assistant Medical Librarian at the University of Iowa for 22 years, retiring in 1987. He also assisted in designing the University of Iowa Health Science Library in the 1970’s. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis, Friends of the University Library, Johnson County I Club, The Optimists’ Club, and The First Presbyterian Church. He loved going to Church and for many years, he was the Elder and Deacon of the church which was a very special role to him. If you knew Bob, you knew the smiling face that would greet you in the Church with a service program for midnight mass. while volunteered his time doing many different things for others and was especially known for his 20 years as a Meals on Wheels Volunteer, until he moved to Minnesota.

Bob’s love will be missed by the many he is survived by; his children, Jeffrey Cryder of Minneapolis and Melissa Cryder of Chicago; sisters, Connie (Dick) Kroeck and Lucema (Paul) Nelson, many extended family members and the many friends he made everywhere he went.
Bob preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, Catherine and a brother, John, who sadly passed away this year on Bob’s 95th birthday.
