Steven Wesley Hinkhouse, 75, died at his home in West Liberty, Iowa, on November 22, 2017. Visitation will be held at the St. Joseph’s parish hall on Saturday, December 2, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date with his late wife at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.

Steven was born to Nevin and Belle Hinkhouse on October 18, 1942 in Iowa City. He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1961 and received a B.A. in history and political science from Cornell College in 1965. He then attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Boston. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970. During his Navy career, he studied Portuguese at the Defense Language Institute. Because of his language skills, he was able later to lead a Rotary study tour to Brazil. He belonged to the West Liberty Rotary Club and served as president of it. He also served on the West Liberty city council.

On February 28, 1981, Steven married Marilyn Mosle at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West Liberty. They hosted Rotary exchange students from Brazil and Germany in their home. Steven worked in the nursery and landscape business for many years. His last nursery site was near Moscow, Iowa. Later he did contract pruning work. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College in 1998 with an associates degree in culinary arts; he participated in culinary activities at his church, especially. He had a lifetime interest in trains and helped the train museum staff in Galesburg, Illinois, with their collections.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West Liberty. He was commissioned to serve communion to the homebound of the congregation. During that service, he attended a number of residents at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty in addition to parishioners at their own homes. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and assisted with their activities.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his sister, Ann Hinkhouse, Tipton, and Sr. Mira Mosle of Dubuque.
