Richard A. “Dick” Lahr, 94, of Legacy Gardens in Iowa City died peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2017. A Vigil Service will be held at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 4:30 PM followed by visitation from 5-7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City with The Reverend Gary Beckman officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City with Military Honors by The Solon American Legion, Post 460.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1200 Pleasant St., Des Moines, IA, 50309 or Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade St., Iowa City, IA, 52240.

Richard was born April 12, 1923 in East Pleasant Plain, IA, the son of Tony and Rose (Franzen) Lahr. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Ambrose College, and his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from The University of Iowa. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army and served for 3 years in the “89th” Infantry Division. He married Mary G. (Eagle) on June 6, 1946 at St. James Catholic Church, Washington, IA.

As an educator and administrator, Mr. Lahr served a total of 38 years in the communities of Stockport (4), Solon (14), and Iowa City (20). At Solon he was a teacher-coach in 1951, became a principal in 1954, and a superintendent in 1958. He served 20 years in the Iowa City Community School District as an Administrative Assistant beginning in 1965. He also served for 12 years as Secretary of the Iowa City School Board. He touched the lives of many students and developed close and meaningful relationships at each of these school districts.

Mr. Lahr was a member of the Iowa State Education Association, School Administrators of Iowa, National Association of School Administrators, The Solon American Legion Post 460, Knights of Columbus Council 842, and the Johnson County Retired School Personnel Association.
Upon retirement in 1985, Dick enjoyed many activities including playing cards, mall walking, family celebrations, trout fishing, RV traveling with his wife, Mary, especially to AZ for the winter months, and making many wooden crafts for his family. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church for over 50 years. He was a devoted husband and a very kind-hearted father. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were his pride and joy. In 2012 he flew on the Eastern Iowa Honor Tour to Washington D.C. War Memorials. In 2017 he received a Quilt of Valor and a Hospice certificate in recognition of his military service.

Richard is survived by three daughters, Rosemary Timlin (Paul) of Cedar Rapids, Linda Sullivan (Jim) of Virginia Beach, VA, Theresa Adamson (Mike) of Scottsdale, AZ; two sons, Larry Lahr (Barb) of Lakewood, CO, and Rick Lahr (Diane) of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, and 8 step great grandchildren.

Mr. Lahr was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary of 67 years; brother, Joe; and one infant great granddaughter.
