Bertha Ruth Armstrong, was born in Clayton, NJ, on October 22, 1920. She found her Lord and Savior, on October 8, 2017, at the Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County, with her family by her side.

She married Dr. Mark Armstrong in 1945 and they had three children, John (Lucy), Barbara (Tim) Happel, and Karen (David) Penick. She has lived in Iowa City since 1954.

Bertha graduated from Houghton College in NY, and attended Columbia University. She loved her family. In addition to her children, she had her grandchildren: Carline (Bryan), Randy (Kerlynn), Daniel, Gretchen, Claire (Kam) and her 8 great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed nature, music, her church and her family. She was a very kind and gentle soul and will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mark; a sister, Helene and an unborn son.
The family deeply appreciated her home caregivers, Vicki and Cheyenne, Iowa City Hospice and the Bird House family for their grace and care in the last years of Bertha’s life.

Private family services have been held through Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
