Sylvia A. Grucza, 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 2nd at Country View Senior Living in North Liberty, Iowa.
A memorial and celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held at a future date in Phoenix, Arizona with the immediate family.
Sylvia was born in Lackawanna, New York to Frank and Helen Darmstedter on February 8, 1933. She attended the University Of Buffalo School Of Nursing where she earned her R.N. (Registered Nurse) and met John “Jack” Grucza and they were married on September 15, 1953. They started their life together in San Antonio, Texas while Jack attended Army basic training and throughout their years together lived in Rochester Minnesota, Ames Iowa, Iowa City Iowa and Sun City West Arizona before moving to Country View Senior Living.
Sylvia worked off and on throughout her life as a nurse in a variety of settings but always brought her nursing care and compassion to her extensive volunteer efforts. She was a kind and gentle volunteer and was especially interested in working with the elderly, always engaging her clients to tell them about their life. She raised her sons and daughters to be good people with a wide range of diverse lifestyles, interests, faiths, senses of humor and politics while unconditionally loving each one. She instilled in each of her children the importance of service and doing for others as she had done throughout her life very often putting the needs of others before herself. She loved to sit and listen to everyone’s multiple conversations around the dinner table and always loved a good laugh. She was devoted to her husband, children and especially her grandchildren helping out when she could to spend time with them while giving their parents a break.
Sylvia is survived by her husband John “Jack” Grucza of Sun City, Arizona; Paula (Tom) Damgaard of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Ellen (Steve) Diedrichsen of Des Moines, Iowa; John (Sandy) Grucza of Southington, Connecticut and Paul (Brenda) Grucza of Phoenix, Arizona; her grandchildren Nikki (Josh) Wilkinson of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mitchell (Claire) Damgaard of Dubuque, Iowa and Taylor and Connor Grucza of Southington, Connecticut; her great-grandson Chase Wilkinson and her sister Rosemarie “Tommy” Gardon of Buffalo, New York and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Bernice Sojda and Frannie Lampman.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial contributions to be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City Iowa 52240.
