Charles F. ‘Charlie” Klumforth, 82, formerly of 1622 Lower Muscatine Road in Iowa City, died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City.

At Charlie’s request, he was cremated. A graveside service will be held Friday at 10:00 AM at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie was born June 1, 1922 in Iowa City, the son of Charles & Agnes (Teller) Klumforth.
He married Kathryn Mae Post on May 15, 1947 in Rock Island, Illinois.
A WWII veteran, Charlie enlisted in the Army at age 19 where upon he was sent to Texas at Non-Com. Off. Training Center and made staff sergeant in eight months. He was then sent to Fort Dix, New Jersey to Camp Kilmer to then be sent overseas in the largest convoy to be sent to Europe. 13 days later Charlie landed in France. He was then ordered to Germany where he was wounded in battle. Later he was flown in a transport plane to a Michigan hospital. He was discharged at the age of 24 years.

Charlie was in three theaters – France, Belgium and Holland. He earned two purple hearts and a medal for rifle combat infantry. A lifelong Iowa City resident, Charlie was an assistant streets superintendent for the City of Iowa City for 35 years until his retirement.

He is survived by a step-daughter, Katie Bowser & her husband Bill of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Betty McNabb and Ada Mae Svatos, both of Iowa City and several nieces and nephews.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Kathryn of 54 years and a step-son David.

The family would like to express our deep appreciation to Bickford Cottage; to the staff and especially Katie & Kerrie who were so loving and caring to Charlie and his family; also to Iowa City Hospice, Peggy, Barb, Deanna, Lori and Bruce and all the rest of the staff who brought us the comfort we all needed.
