Beverly Sue Mathes, 69, of Hills, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 12, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 18 at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, Iowa. Burial will follow at Oak Wood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Monday, July 17 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or a memorial fund in her name.

Beverly was born May 20, 1948 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Ivan and Wilma (Kamerick) Mathes. She was raised in Pella and graduated from Pella High School. Beverly moved to Iowa City in 1969 then Hills in 1981. She was also a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City.

For 47 years Beverly cared for others as a Registered Nurse. She was proud to be a nurse and had the opportunity to work at several care facilities including the Iowa City VA Health Care System and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, sewing, camping, shopping, country music, especially The Statler Brothers and traveling.

Beverly loved her family very much. Following then Governor Robert Ray’s signature on law revising adoptions in Iowa in 1976, Beverly became the first single parent in the state to adopt a child from India.

Beverly is survived by her daughters; Wendy (Eric) Boeding of Ft. Madison (Nadia, Isabella, Leif), Misty Mathes of Hills (Annyka, Kayden, Camryn) and her adopted daughter, Tandra Mathes (Bonnie Lou’s daughter) of Hills (Desmond), her nieces; Brenda (Daryl) Sytsma, Linda (Eric) Simon and her nephew, Brian Bloodsworth all of Oskaloosa and her sisters Patricia (Ron) Bloodsworth of Oskaloosa and Tena Mathes of Albia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Wilma Mathes and her twin sister Bonnie Mathes.
