Patricia Ann (“Patty”) Prybil, longtime resident of New York City and a former resident of Iowa City, passed away on June 22, 2017, after a long, brave battle with cancer.

A daughter of Vivian and Reynolds Prybil, Patty was raised in rural Johnson County. She completed elementary education at Union Township School #8 and graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in 1956. Patty received a BA from The University of Iowa and a MA from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In later years, she pursued additional graduate studies at New York University.

After teaching at private high schools in New York City, Patty was the first woman appointed to the faculty of Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. It is one of the nation’s leading institutions of higher learning in the field of aeronautics, and grants undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines. Patty was a tenured Professor at Vaughn College and also was an Adjunct Professor at the City University of New York for many years.

Patty Prybil was a remarkable woman, a gifted teacher who was adored by her students, many of whom kept in touch with her long after they graduated. Witty and beautiful, with a delicious sense of humor, Patty attracted people and maintained a wide circle of friendships in Iowa City, New York City, and beyond. She will be missed by her students, family, and friends, all of whom loved this special woman.

Patty is survived by her sister, Penelope Donahue (and her husband Dick) who live in Iowa City, her brother, Lawrence Prybil (and his wife Marilyn) who live in Lexington, Kentucky, four nephews – Andrew, Christopher, and Daniel Davis and David Prybil – and a niece, Catherine Prybil Stoll.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Patty’s life will be held from 4-6 pm on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. Memorial contributions may be directed to Father Flanagan’s Boy’s home (www.boystown.org) or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.
