Raymond "Ray" Lester Reel, 61, died July 1, 2017 at UIHC in Iowa City of complications from diabetes.

Many of his college and veteran friends will commemorate Ray at 5:30 pm July 19 at Coach's Corner in Iowa City. Many of his co-workers and legal friends and acquaintances will commemorate him from 4-6 pm July 21 at the Eagles Club in Iowa City.

Ray was born in Des Moines August 17, 1955 to Eunice Marie (Willis) Reel and Jack Lester Reel.

After graduating from Des Moines Dowling High School in 1973, Ray enlisted in the US Army, serving as a German translator. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1977. After the Army, he enrolled at the University of Iowa. He earned a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1986. His 30-year law career included prosecuting attorney, magistrate and public defender. He worked in Sioux City, Marshalltown and Iowa City. He retired from the Iowa State Public Defender's Office in Iowa City on May 2, 2017. Ray was Iowa State Public Defender of the Year in 2012 after going undefeated in seven straight jury trials.

Ray enjoyed the outdoors: camping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed time with friends. He was argumentative and enjoyed the counterpoint of a discussion. His argumentative nature is what made him a such a successful legal mind.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice and Jack. He is survived by his sisters, Debra (David) Dunegan and Carleen Bach, both of Des Moines. He will be greatly missed by his many friends.

Private committal will be at The Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
