Francis L. Voss, 94, resident of the Beatitudes Campus, Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of Iowa City, Iowa, died Sunday May 23, 2004, after a brief illness. Born June 12, 1909, in Jewell, Iowa, he was the son of William and Jessie Voss. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S.C. in 1932. On Aug. 22, 1933, he married Mildred L. Dow of Villisca, Iowa. After various business ventures in Iowa and South Dakota, they settled in Iowa City, Iowa, and operated the Iowa City News Agency, which wholesaled and retailed newspapers and magazines to town businesses for many years.

Mildred preceeded him in death in 1971.

Francis took an active role in the Iowa City Toastmasters Club and the Lions Club. He loved boating on the Mississippi River, ballroom dancing and attending grandchildren's school activities.

He married Grayce Bailey on Aug. 22, 1981.

After several years of traveling, they settled at the Beatitudes Campus in Phoenix, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Grayce Bailey Voss of Phoenix; son, Dow (Barbara) Voss of Coralville, Iowa; and grandsons, Andrew (Catherine) Voss (great-grandchildren Russell, Rachel and Will) of Essexville, Mich., and Daniel (Stacey) Voss of Rockwell, Iowa (great-grandchildren Matthew, Kathren and Sarah); and son, Richard Voss of Lorain, Ohio, and granddaughters, Julianne (Nathan) Foulkes of Providence, R.I., and Kara Voss of Berkeley, Calif.

Francis was ever a true gentleman.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Memory Gardens Mausoleum, 2600 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City, Iowa.
