Mary Jean (Sparks) Wood, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, April 18 at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 10 am until service time. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans Charity or to the Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Mary was born September 18, 1926 in Bertram, IA, the daughter of David F. and Bessie Fern (Comp) Sparks. Her early years were spent in the Bertram and Cedar Rapids areas, graduating from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids in 1944. She was united in marriage to Enoch “Dick” Wood on December 30, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, IA. The couple made their home in North Liberty and she was employed as a cashier in the staff dining room at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Mary was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.

Mary is survived by her two daughters: Juanita Walker of Lone Tree and her children, Trisha (Owen) Murray, Shonda Shockley and Jamie Walker; Sandy Robe and her husband Steven of North Liberty, and their children Nathan (Melanie), Brandon and Kathryn (Matt) Keller; two sons: Larry Wood and his wife Robin of Anderson, South Carolina, and his son Benjamin (Betsy); Steven Wood and his wife Laurie of Iowa City, and their children Philip (Jennifer) and Jennifer (Matt) Ploeger; 11 great-grandchildren; her sister Fae Edwards and her husband Larry of Cedar Rapids; her brother David Sparks and his wife Shirley of Ankeny.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Dennis, husband, three great-grandchildren; three sisters: Ora Fare, LaVonne Lewig and Dorothy Wood; her daughter-in-law Rosemarie Wood, and a son-in-law James Walker.
