Dr. Carl E. Betts 89, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 under the compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice at The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County.
He was born April 30, 1927 in Fort Wayne, IN, the son of Rio and Dora Betts. He was raised in Collinsville, Ill most of his young life. He enlisted in the Navy after his Jr. year in high school to serve his country in WWII. After his return home he completed his senior year and graduated from Collinsville Township High School.
Carl earned a BA in 1951 from the University of Iowa and married Jo Ann Allan in that same year. His first job was in Cerro Guerdo County working as a speech therapist in speech correction in children. He moved his growing family to Iowa City to work on his MA (1955) and later his Doctorate degree (1963) in Speech Pathology and Audiology. He remained in Iowa City all of his working career where he held several positions at the University of Iowa Hospitals during his long tenure there. He was employed as director of Speech and Hearing Services for Crippled Children (SSCC). In the late 70’s he also became director of Speech and Hearing Services at the Hospital School. Later he also became an Associate Professor in the department of pediatrics. Along with all of his clinical work and outreach programs across the state, he served as a Clinical Professor in the department of Speech and Audiology in Liberal Arts at the University of Iowa where he taught many students.
Carl was passionate about wanting to help as many children with speech and hearing issues not only locally, but throughout the state of Iowa where few services and specialists were available to them at the time. He and others expanded established statewide field clinics for children.
Carl retired in 1989 to continue to enjoy his other passions in life which were hunting, fishing, gardening and family. He was a true outdoorsman…. He enjoyed his yearly hunting expeditions in the State of Montana with his former working friends. He earned his nickname “Moose Jaw” as he hunted for Moose and Elk almost every year. Carl hunted deer in Iowa during the winter season in the Keosauqua area. He spent many nights with his hunting buddies in his camper, and hunted on the Bob Campbell Century old farmstead. In the spring he would fish for trout in the Iowa Creeks and lakes.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jo Ann of 66 years, sons Mikel (Vicki) Betts of Iowa City, Scott (Alice) Betts of Grand Junction, CO, Kirk Betts of North Liberty, and grandchildren, Jameson of Iowa City, Andy and Joel of Grand Junction, CO, his great-grandchildren, Lilly, Bradley, Gabriella and Ivy all from Grand Junction, CO; and a sister, Phyllis Thompson.
