Jeffrey P. Strottmann, 62, of Iowa City, died Monday, February 6, 2017 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City of complications due to liver failure.

His family will greet friends Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville, IA. A celebration of Jeff's life and opportunity for sharing will begin at 4:00 pm.

Jeff was born November 11, 1954 in Iowa City, IA to LaVella "Lee" (Hafar) and Merlin "Paul" Strottmann. He graduated from Iowa City West High School in 1971. He subsequently enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was stationed in Okinawa. Later, he received degrees from colleges and universities in Minnesota, Iowa, Arizona, and Oregon, including a law degree from Arizona State.

After traveling far and wide, Jeff returned to live in Iowa City around 1994. He worked in Food Services at the University of Iowa Hospital, retiring in 2010.

Jeff always rooted for the underdog, and was passionate about peace and justice. While working at the hospital, he was heavily involved in the AFSCME union, representing other workers' interests. At the same time, and especially after he retired, he was devotedly involved
with Veterans for Peace, where he forged great friendships.

Jeff was also a lifelong fan of the Hawkeyes, and enjoyed developing his own football team depth chart each summer. He loved music, and researched the history of many a jazz group. He was a voracious reader, from pulp westerns to intellectually dense out-of-print sociology works; he loved Iowa City's bookstores, and his library card was positioned at the front of his wallet. Jeff was as interested in discussing what excited you as what excited him, and made friends easily.

Survivors include his brother Jim of Franklin, Wisconsin, his aunt Jean of Waverly, IA, and several cousins.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Brad.
