Donald Burnett, 86, longtime Iowa City resident, died Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Lone Tree Health Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 7th at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Very Rev Rudolph Juarez officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. Graveside Committal with military honors will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Family of Shirley Burnett or to Hospice Compassus.

Born December 2, 1930 in Iowa City, the son of Nova and Esther Kinny Burnett, Don was raised in Iowa City and graduated from Cosgrove High School. He was a Corporal and a demolition specialist in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1960. On May 18, 1957 Don married Shirley Donohoe at St. Patrick’s Church.

He was a dedicated route salesman for Coca-Cola and Wonder Bread for many years. He later worked at City Service Gas Station. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church for over 50 years and after moving to Lone Tree in 2006, he and Shirley were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree.

Survivors include his wife Shirley and their seven children;
Kathy (Steve) Sternad of Austin, TX, Marge (Tab) Ray of Waverly, IA, Tim (Rita) Burnett of Coralville, IA, Mary Burnett of Streamwood, IL, Linda Sandhu of Eagle River, Alaska, Phyllis (Tammy) Burnett of Cedar Rapids, IA, Diane (Andy) Cooper of Austin, TX, eleven grandchildren; Matthew (Jenny) Sternad, Katie (Tom) Barnett, Jasper (Karen) Ray, Kelsey (Garrett) Christeson, Whitney Burnett, Travis Burnett, Alexis Hendershot, Kimberly (Josh) Sandhu-Cox, Michaeljit Sandhu, Luke Cooper and Ashlea Cooper, five great-grandchildren; Steven, Sadie, Harper, Hadley, and Elin; and his sister, Joann Rohr of Moline, IL.
Don was preceded in death by; his parents, his mother and father-in-law, his sister, Betty Rohret, his brother-in-law, Thomas Rohret, his nephew, Larry Rohret and his grandson, Anthony Michael Hendershot.
