Jack P Dunlap, 89, a longtime resident of Iowa City, and North Liberty, died Thursday November 17, 2016, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.

Jack Paul Dunlap was born December 25, 1926, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of John B and Pauline M (Swalm) Dunlap. At age 2, he moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa graduating from Belle Plaine High school in 1944. Following high school, Jack enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp serving his country in World War II. He returned to Iowa following the war and was united in marriage to Lorraine E Haynes of Tama. The couple soon moved to Iowa City where Jack managed Dean Jones DX Service Station on the corner of Burlington and Capitol Streets for many years. After that, he and Lorraine owned and operated Gifts by Ja-Lor. He then worked for several years at the University of Iowa in Residence Services. After retirement Jack worked part time for Guest Services at UIHC in valet parking where he really enjoyed meeting and getting to know many regular visitors and patients of the hospital.

Jack was a voracious reader and enjoyed history and doing crossword puzzles. He had a special love for all animals big and small. He was interested in everything and everyone. He had a gift for making everyone feel special and cared for. His family will miss his quick wit and dry humor as well as his deep kindness and love.

Jack’s pride and what he perceived as his greatest accomplishment was his family. Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorraine of North Liberty, his sons, Dennis Dunlap (special friend Peggy), Terry Dunlap (Patty), and Steven Dunlap (Sue), daughter, Diane Dunlap (Linda Myers); grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Nadia, Gayle Dombroski (Dan), and Taylor; great- granddaughter Ryan Kay Dombroski and several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Catherine Dunlap, Maxine Humphrey, and Joann Slater, and brother Samuel Dunlap.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to UIHC physicians Dr. Lois Geist, Dr. Richard LeBlond, Dr. Katherine White, and Dr. James Rossen, Dr. Phillip Horowitz, as well as the many talented nurses at UIHC who gave him the highest quality professional care. The family would also like to thank Dr. Ming Lui of the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Comfort Care of Coralville, the North Liberty Care Pro Pharmacy team, as well as the talented staff of Briarwood for their caring contributions to Jack’s life.

As his final gift, Jack has deeded his body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place on December 29, 2016 from 4-6pm at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, concluding with military honors provided. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory can be made to the Safe Haven Animal Shelter or the charity of choice.
