Richard “Dick” Martin Runge, 80, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at his home in Iowa City.

Richard has deeded his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program and there are no services planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his name to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Richard was born on September 18, 1936 in Denison, Iowa, the son of Martin and Ella (Christiansen) Runge. He graduated from Denison Public High School in 1954 and served in the US Air Force from 1954 – 1958. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he received his BA (1961), MA (1963) and PhD (1967) degrees.

On June 13, 1959, he married Miriam Christine Cole at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Richard served on the faculty of the German Department at the University of Iowa from 1967 until his retirement in 1998.

Richard is survived by his wife Miriam; his son, Cole (Elizabeth) Runge and their children, Cole and Samuel, of De Pere, Wisconsin; his daughter, Christina Runge and her daughter, Maia, of New Berlin, Wisconsin; his sisters, Tina Lewis of Santa Rosa, California and Paula Hassler of Tempe, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Ella; and his brothers-in-law, Bob Lewis and Don Hassler.
