Charles R. “Charlie” Paul, 81, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Monday, October 3, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A Memorial Service will begin Saturday at 10:00 am at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the North Liberty Community Library. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Darrouzett, Texas.

Born June 9, 1935 in Texas, the son of Wallie and Leta (Morley) Paul, Charlie grew up in the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. He attended Indiana Jr. College in Ft. Wayne. Charlie married Jean Verdine. The couple later divorced. He later met and married Rosemary Hora on May 25, 1996.

Charlie served in the United States Air Force from 1953 – 1957 and was stationed in France.
He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard and the VFW for several years. Charlie worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a special investigator and was also an over the road driver for Werner Enterprises. He later worked for the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers at the Coralville Reservoir.

Charlie raised Appaloosa horses, enjoyed hunting and belonged to the Senior Bowling League. He liked reading westerns and watching westerns on TV.

Survivors include his wife Rosemary; children, Christina Paul, William Paul (Florence), Julie Viar (Mark), Alicia Turner (David), Sherri Paul, Johanna Paul and Katie Beerbower;
a brother Kenneth Wayne Paul (Kathryn); step-children, Theresa Detert, Cliff Hora and Don Hora; 18 grandchildren and 6 step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Jack Stevens, sister Jaunita Stockton, brother Roger Paul, nephew Danny Stockton, an infant son Jonathan Charles Paul and his former wife Jean Verdine Paul.
