Helen J. Sorensen, 95, died Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Mercy Hospital, in Iowa City.
Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills, where there will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the mass. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery west of Hills. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to Hill Atrium Village. Helen was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 15, 1921, to Claude L. and Alma (Duba) Parker. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1939 and then attended and graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Iowa City, in May of 1942. On June 7, 1948, she married Lawrence J. Sorensen, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He died June 20, 1986.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Hills, worked with the Muscular Degeneration support group at the Senior Center, and was also involved in bridge groups there.
Survivors include her son, John L. (Rhonda Dunn) Sorensen of Iowa City, 3 grandchildren, Laura, Dana, and Emily Sorensen, one brother, Alan L. Parker of Cedar Rapids, and several nieces and nephews.
Helen’s husband, brother, Gerald, of Clinton, her parents, and a special friend, Don Bolensiefer, of San Diego, CA, died earlier.
