Linda Schuppener, aged 73, passed away on August 19th at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness. Her spouse Vaughn Meadows, her brother David, her brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Barbara, her sisters-in-law Heidi and Holly, and her nephew Paul survive her.
A lifelong learner with diverse academic interests, Linda began her studies at the University of Illinois, briefly pursuing a Pre-Med major before switching her major to English. She studied for two years at the American College in Paris and remained devoted to the City of Lights during her lifetime. After completing her bachelor’s degree in English, she continued her education, earning an MFA in Creative Writing and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Iowa.
Linda was a great advocate for students, and a devoted teacher who enjoyed engaging her students in spirited political debates, challenging their ideas and encouraging them to think deeply and meaningfully. She taught at several colleges in Iowa before becoming an English Department faculty member at Kirkwood Community College. In recognition of her outstanding teaching, Linda received a Kirkwood Difference Award in 2004. When interviewed in the Kirkwood Communique, Linda espoused the important role the Humanities play. “They help you to understand more about human beings,” Linda said. “And when you know more about human nature, you understand more about how to persuade and encourage people.” In 2012, she retired from Kirkwood where she taught literature and composition classes for over 13 years.
Throughout her life, Linda remained an avid reader of literary, historical, and political texts. Her love of good French wine and food was matched only by her affection for cats, particularly Siamese ones. Her acerbic wit, keen intelligence, empathy and kindness endeared her to colleagues and friends alike. To honor Linda’s memory, donations may be made to the Friends of the Animals Center Foundation at this website: http://facf.org/pages/donate-now.php.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City is assisting with Linda’s arrangements.
