Alexis Marie Deutmeyer, 29, of Grimes and Iowa City, died peacefully Tuesday, July 26th at UIHC surrounded by her loving family. Alexis touched so many people’s lives in her short but very memorable life. Although she was in intense pain and suffering those final 6 and 1/2 weeks she was still able to make her family, friends and caregivers laugh with her quick wit.
Alexis was born August 25, 1986 in Iowa City. She was a graduate of City High School and attended the University of Iowa. Alexis had been a resident of the Des Moines area the past six years. Alexis spent most of her adult life as a waitress and a bartender because she loved being around people and was a social butterfly. She had a couple of desk jobs but that just didn’t cut it. There was not enough interaction for that girl.
Her family and friends all talk about her beautiful smile and contagious laugh. She was always a joy to be around and had the best sense of humor. She was a loyal daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend.
Alexis loved country music, her dog Zoey, boating with her family on the Mississippi and tailgating at Iowa Hawkeye football games. She was a sun goddess and loved hanging out at the pool with friends.
Lex, as her friends called her, was 100% committed to her family and friends. Lauren said, “She was a true, genuine friend.” Emily said, “She was outgoing and always down to have fun” and Rachel added, “She would do anything for the people she loved.”
Alexis’ life would seem too short for many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM, Saturday, July 30th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Visitation will be Friday, July 29th from 4 to 7PM at Lensing Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville. In lieu of flowers the Alexis Deutmeyer Memorial Fund has been established.
Alexis leaves behind her mother, Gwen (Gary) Bishop of Iowa City; her siblings, Zach and Madison Swehla; Step siblings, Lindsey and Lauren Bishop and Ashley (Rick) Rauth; her step father, Chris Swehla of Bettendorf; her grandmother Katie Deutmeyer of Dubuque, her aunts and uncles Mitzi (Doug) May of Port Byron, Scott Deutmeyer and Shawn Langel of Hazel Green and Jennifer Artingstall of Dubuque, her cousins Savanna, Victoria, Elle, Caroline, Madi, Amelia and extended family and friends; her father Jeff Bock and family from Chicago and her loving companion Zoey.
Alexis was preceded in death by her “fantastic” grandfather Melvin Deutmeyer of Dubuque.
The family would like to thank her caregivers. We cannot say enough about the quality of care Alexis received at the UIHC. The doctors and their teams, nurses, nursing assistants, and all the staff on 6RC East and the MICU that we had contact with were all extremely skilled and timely in the care of Alexis. The only thing more impressive than the care was the quality, passion and compassion of the people who cared for her. We will never forget the many people who cared for her.
