Veronica A. Evans, 94, longtime resident of Iowa City, died peacefully with her family beside her at Crestview Specialty Care on Tuesday in West Branch, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 am Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, with a vigil service beginning at 7:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Nolan Settlement.

Veronica was born April 1, 1922 in Morse, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Helene (Leonard) Stahle. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Iowa City in 1940 and was united in marriage to William “Bill” Evans June 25, 1946 in Iowa City. Veronica worked for the Iowa City Community School District in food service for many years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Veronica was an avid baker and was well known for her cookies, pies and cakes. Her specialty though, was her banana cream pie, which to this day, has yet to be replicated.

Veronica is survived by her children, Jayne Doyle (Elizabeth Monk) of Evanston, Illinois, Joanne Shay (Steve) of Olathe, Kansas, Jim Evans of Iowa City, Mary Rummelhart (Doug) of Roanoke, Texas and Nancy Doormann (Dennis) of Geneva, Illinois; grandchildren, Brendan, Sara (Cory), Katie (Kaleb), Mike, John, Tyler, Will, Jorge (Jessica) and Joel; great-grandchildren, Jack, Emma, Myles, Brody and Mallory and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, a sister Mary Miller and brothers, Robert, Raymond, John and Tom.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Crestview Specialty Care for the exceptional care provided to Veronica.
