Dorothy E. Haverkamp, 88, of Iowa City, died Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Mercy Hospice Care Unit in Iowa City.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A Catholic Daughter’s Rosary will be held at 3:30 pm and a parish vigil service at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will begin Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Reverend Gary Beckman will officiate. Respecting Dorothy’s wishes, her body will be deeded to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Mercy Hospice Care Unit.

Born December 16, 1927 in Iowa City, the daughter of Wilfred & Mary (Cilek) Cole, Dorothy was raised in Iowa City and graduated from University High School in 1945. She attended the University of Iowa and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University – later earning her Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa in 1966.

She married Jerome Brejcha on June 21, 1952 in Iowa City. Jerome died in 1957. As years passed, Dorothy later met Clarence Haverkamp and the couple married June 16, 1969 in Iowa City. Dorothy began her teaching career at Longfellow Elementary, where she taught for 18 years and later at Robert Lucas Elementary for 17 years. She retired from teaching in 1993.

She was a member of Catholic Daughter’s of the America’s – of which she served as past Regent, St. Wenceslaus Altar & Rosary Society, the Iowa City Education Association and was actively involved with Pre-Cana and the National Marriage Encounter. Dorothy also served on the Mercy Hospital Guild Board and the Johnson County Retired School Personnel Association.
She was a founding member of the Bed & Breakfast Guild of Iowa.

Her memberships extended to Pi Lamda Theta Education Sorority, Alpha Delta Pi and the U of I Alumni Association.

Survivors include her husband Clarence; her children,
Anne Croker (Jim) of Iowa City and their children, Jenny, Lisa (Chris) Spiek, Jim and Andy;
John Brejcha (Kay) of Johnstown, Colorado and their children Kelly (Gabe) Thexton and Matt (Rebecca);
Mike Haverkamp (Lisa) of Iowa City and their children Rowan and Laurel;
Tom Haverkamp (Kim) and their children Joe (Kristen) and Dan (Lisa);
and Jim Haverkamp (Joyce) of Durham, North Carolina and their daughter Sofia;
7 great-grandchildren, a sister, Betty Shay of Iowa City;
sisters in law, Martha Haverkamp of Remsen, Iowa and Mary Masuen (Vincent) of LeMars, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her parents in law, Henry and Catherine Haverkamp and brothers and sister in law, Jack Shay and Robert and Helen Nelson.
