Farrokh Tirgardoun died March 16, 2016. He was born on October 27, 1926 in Baku, Azerbaijan in the former Soviet Union. As a young boy, Farrokh was forced to leave Baku with his family and resettle in Azerbaijan in Iran. Later, he met and married Adeleh Habibpour, and they relocated to Behshar, in north central Iran, where they raised their family. Farrokh owned and operated a small family grocery store in Behshahr, and later he and Adeleh moved to the United States to be with their children. In 2011, Farrokh became a citizen of the United States at a ceremony in Davenport, Iowa. At this ceremony, Farrokh was the recipient of an American flag for being the oldest new citizen in the room.

Farrokh is survived by his children: Maryam Tirgardoun of Shiraz, Iran; Esmaeel and Katelyn (Dasse) Tirgardoun; Parvin Tirgardoun, Zari Tirgardoun and Mehran Kazemi; Ebrahim and Maryam Tirgardoun; Jalal and Shahrbanoo Tirgardoun, all of Coralville, and by grandchildren, Elham and Mohammed Zahreh of Iran, Roya and Benjamin Tirgardoun; Daniel and Sophia Tirgardoun and Emily Tirgardoun, all of Coralville, and one sister and one brother of Iran and numerous nieces and nephews.

Farrokh was preceded in death by his wife, three sons, a son-in-law, his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Farrokh was a strong and generous man. He loved to travel and did so extensively when he lived in Iran and also after he moved to the United States, visiting Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Yellowstone, the Niagara Falls, Canada and Las Vegas among other locations. He had a lifelong passion for politics, loved to discuss them, and kept up on current events until the time of his death. We are sorry that he will not get to vote in or see the outcome of the current presidential race!

Farrokh loved his family and took great pleasure from his grandchildren. Even though he dearly missed his home country of Iran, he loved living in the Coralville/Iowa City area and never took for granted the freedom offered him in America.

While he was still healthy, Farrokh enjoyed taking long walks in Coralville. He loved to have his family and friends gathered around and to eat Iranian food. He would never say “no” to anyone offering him a drink. He had a goofy side, too – he liked to wear baseball caps – and was always a good sport about being teased. We will all miss him. May he rest in peace.

The Tirgardoun family extends an invitation for friends to gather at Essy and Katie’s house, 915 12th Avenue in Coralville, after the burial.
