Haywood Barnett Belle, 76, died peacefully Monday, March 14th at his home.

Funeral Services will be held at 1PM, Monday March 21st at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Rev. Richard Greene officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 AM to 1PM on Monday. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. A reception will follow at The Kirkwood Room. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Rotary Foundation or the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Haywood was born April 27, 1939 in Iowa City, the son of Kenneth and Hulette Barnett Belle. He was a graduate of City High School, where he played on the football team and played drums in the band. Haywood attended the University of Iowa and received his bachelor’s degree from Parsons College. He served in the US Air Force. On May 22, 1999 Haywood married Sarah Wallace in New York City.

Haywood owned and operated H.D. Short and Sons real estate and development company in Iowa City. He was a member of Life Church in Coralville, Iowa City Noon Rotary and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He volunteered for many years with the State Department of Corrections and had served on the Iowa City Board of Review and the State Historical Society of Iowa. Haywood was a member of the Friday morning breakfast club at the Iowa City Village Inn. From 1995-2008 Haywood was the “center line” coordinator at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC, a role he was given by his sister-in-law, Anne Wallace.

Haywood travelled throughout the US and abroad, was a jazz enthusiast and loved to cook. He was proud of his Iowa City heritage and was a loving son, husband and friend too many.

Haywood is survived by his wife Sarah; cousins, Lynn Evans and Phillip Evans, both of Chicago;
sister-in-law, Ann-Louise Wallace of New York City and brother-in-law, Mark (Virginie) Wallace of Mill Valley , CA ; nephew, Dustin Wallace; and his beloved black lab, Calvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Audrey Wharton
