Theodor “Ted” Breuer of Coralville passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016, at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. The family will hold an open house in his memory on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 2-4pm at 2171 Terra Lane, Coralville, Iowa.

Ted was born on October 8, 1932 in Piqua, Ohio, the son of Theodor and Wilhelmine (Schnitker) Breuer. After spending his early childhood in Ohio, he came to Germany via a long adventurous journey that took him to Hawaii, Japan, Manchuria and on the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Berlin, a story he shared with many. Once in Germany, he grew up and made lifelong friends in Petersfehn near Oldenburg, learning first ‘Plattdeutsch’ (Low German) and only then Standard High German. He studied in Hildesheim and Wilhelmshaven, returning to Ohio for a year as an exchange student at Antioch College. Ted obtained a degree in agriculture and an advanced degree in Social Sciences.

Ted was married for 56 years to Else-Marie; the two married in Kemme by Hildesheim, Else-Marie’s home town. They spent their first years together near Bremervörde by the North Sea. Then they moved to Salzgitter Groß-Mahner, where they took over an agricultural estate that had been in Else-Marie’s family for several generations. In 1978, Ted’s adventurous streak brought the family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he worked in agricultural real estate and management. Later Ted and Else-Marie’s shared passion for farming and nature led them to their own small farm near Ely. Here they spent more than 20 happy years in a beautiful country setting resembling a Grant Wood painting, until the decline in Ted’s health brought about their move to Coralville.

Ted is survived by his wife Else-Marie and their three daughters: The Hon. Sylke Merchán (Dr. Wilson Merchán) of Norman, Oklahoma; Dr. Talke Macfarland (Dr. Joseph Macfarland) of Arnold, Maryland; and Wiebke Breuer, Esq., of New Orleans, Louisiana; as well as seven grandchildren, Duncan and Claudia Merchán, Cornelius and Sophie Macfarland, and Cy, Behrens, and Wilhelmina Richeson. He is also survived by Helene Breuer, Hans Hermann Breuer (Cornelia Erxleben), Karsten Breuer, Heike Thiemann (Ulf Thiemann), all of Germany. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Hans Hermann Breuer, and two sisters, Hela Barger and Helene Breuer.
