Charles R. Naumann, 76, of Coralville, formerly of rural Greene, died February 13, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, February 18, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville, Iowa. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Iowa City. Local arrangements were with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
Charles “Charlie” Robert Naumann, the son of William and Magdalen (Koenigsfeld) Naumann, was born on May 20, 1939, at home in rural Greene. He attended grade school at St. Mary’s Roseville School. Charlie completed high school at Loras Academy in Dubuque, graduating in 1957. He served in the Military Patrol in the United States Army from 1962-1963, stationed in Ft. Carson, Colorado. Charlie was united in marriage with Linda J. Peck on August 15, 1970, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, Iowa. They made their home on his family’s farm in rural Greene, where they raised three daughters, Lisa, Susan, and Ann. He farmed until 2003 and worked at Curries in Mason City from 1995-2004. Charlie served on the St. Mary’s Roseville Church Council, Marble Rock Elevator Board, Round Grove Country Club Board, and Floyd County Mutual Insurance Board.
Charlie was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, and golfer. He loved spending time with his family, including his grandchildren and loyal shih tzu, Bandit. His love of golf was rewarded with three holes-in-one in his golfing career. He won numerous club championships at the Round Grove Country Club in Greene. In 2007, they moved to Coralville, where he was able to enjoy his hobbies and grandchildren. When not golfing during retirement, he participated in the Standard Patient Program for the Carver College of Medicine. Charlie was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Cleveland Browns, and Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed history and National Public Radio. Charlie had a witty sense of humor and a compassionate heart. He died on February 13, 2016, in Iowa City after an eight year fight with follicular lymphoma. The family would like to thank Dr. Brian Link and the staff of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for the eight years of phenomenal care and support.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; his beloved dog, Bandit; three daughters: Lisa (Dom) Mascardo of Coralville, Susan (Brian) Schatz of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Ann (Joe) Grimstad of Decorah; grandchildren: Charlie and Jake Mascardo, Leah and Daniel Schatz, and Max and Oscar Grimstad; siblings: Philip (Cheryl) Naumann of Coldwater, Ohio, Joseph (Marla) Naumann of Urbandale, Janet Zimmer of Costa Rica, and Paul (Muriel) Naumann of Iowa City; as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Magdalen Naumann; brother, Father John Naumann; a sister at birth; and nephew, Jeff Naumann.Memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Iowa.
