Michael G. Myer, 72 of Coralville, died Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Mercy Hospital under the compassionate care of the Hospice unit following a year long battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am Thursday, January 21, 2016, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City, where a reception will follow. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Memorial donations can be made in Michael’s memory to either the Congregational United Church of Christ or the hospice unit at Mercy Hospital. Michael Gene Myer was born November 26, 1943, in Fairbury, IL, the son of Frank and Marjorie (Bennett) Myer. He attended and graduated from Beardstown, Illinois High School and received his B.S. degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Champaign, IL. Michael was united in marriage to Joyce A. Hinrichsen on April 27, 1968, in Muscatine, IA. He had spent most of his working career in advertising/marketing, working for Montgomery Wards in Chicago, AMF Wheel Goods in Olney, IL, and Ring King in Muscatine. He spent the last 15 years as a personal banker at US bank in Iowa City. He retired in 2009.

Michael was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, where he worked on many relief missions and work camps in conjunction with another church, First Christian Church in Coralville. He once earned his private pilot license, enjoyed boating with his family, and was a serious tennis buff who played on a number of leagues over the years. Michael was an avid reader who always looked forward to getting a new book from his son for birthdays and Christmas. He was a dedicated supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and was always there for any of his grandchildren’s events. For the past several years, he and Joyce looked forward to their annual February trips to Florida.

His family includes his wife, Joyce; their children and spouses, Becky and Bill Hoefer of Coralville; and Tom and Julie Myer of North Liberty; 2 grandchildren, Katie and Ben Hoefer; Michael’s brother, Alan and his wife, Alice Myer of Sheboygan, WI; and their Aunt Winnie Myer of Normal, IL. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Myer.
