Carol Ann Schmidt, 69, of Iowa City, passed away December 3rd at her home after a long battle with cancer.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Carol’s life will be held Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on December 7th at Lensing Funeral Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. A Service of Celebration will begin at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Carol was born in Deer River, Minnesota on June 17, 1946, the daughter of Guy and Vera (Reedy) Smith.

Carol was a loving and dedicated mother and friend. She always had words of comfort and wisdom knowing she would guide us through all of our endeavors. She gave us the strength and conviction to move forward while facing the many challengers and adversities in life. Carol showed kindness and generosity to everyone around her. She will be greatly missed.

Carol started her career as part owner and partner in a restaurant, motel, trailer court, and campground in Montana. Upon returning to Iowa City Carol was employed by TG&Y and Company as office manager until they closed. Carol retired from the Veterans Administration payroll department in 2009.

Carol loved spending winters with her many friends and family in the Rio Grande Valley, where time seemed endless. Summers were spent traveling to see grandchildren and their sporting events, Christmas shopping, crafts, and most of all, flower gardening. For many years Carol also enjoyed spending time on “The Carol Ann” docked on the Mississippi River. Sleeping over weekends and visiting with another family of friends at the marina.

Carol is survived by her husband Richard and two daughters, Laura Kowalczyk of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Shelly (Joey) Jackson of Spirit Lake, Iowa and five grandchildren; Taylor, Jacob, and Alex Kowalczyk, and Josh and Hunter Jackson. Carol’s sisters and brothers Barb (Ralph) Hovland, Pasco, Washington; Karen Flynn, Great Falls, Montana; Paul (Betty) Smith, Hudson, Iowa; Roberta Anderson, Iowa City, Iowa; Guy (Ruth) Smith, Iowa City, Iowa; Darrell (Elaine) Smith, Williamsburg, Iowa; Sue (Mark) Orfield, Norwalk, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
