Carol Lea Rutt, 75, of Iowa City, passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 26th, 2015. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Carol’s life will be held from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The American Heart Association or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Carol was born on June 8, 1940 in Columbus Junction, IA, the daughter of Elard and Juanita (Woodruff) Wasson. She grew up in Columbus Junction and graduated from Columbus Community High School. On June 1st, 1957, Carol married Larry Rutt in North Liberty, IA. Carol worked for over 16 years as a bookkeeper at Clark’s Carpet and also enjoyed her many years as a stay at home mom.
Carol was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan and made it known that she was not to be bothered during a game. She loved to bowl and was in a league for over 21 years. She enjoyed card games, Jeopardy, using her computer, and was well known amongst family and friends not only for her wit and humor, but also as an “expert” slot player as well as a weather watcher. Most importantly, Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister who was always willing to listen to other’s problems and often times served as an “uncertified counselor”. She will be dearly missed by her family and numerous friends.
Survivors include her husband Larry of Iowa City and their four children: Greg (Deb Cox) Rutt of North Liberty, IA, Kristen (Eddie McKinley) Rutt of Iowa City, Lisa (Craig) Murphy of Washington, IA, and Kathy (Jeff Davis) Benge of Iowa City; a sister Myrna (James “Skip”) Sherlock of Iowa City; a brother-in-law Lavon (Nancy) Rutt of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild, and numerous special nieces, nephews and cousins. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law Floyd and Marie Rutt, and two brothers-in-law: Jim (Thelma) Rutt and Don (Jean) Rutt.
