John D. Morgan, D.D.S, 68, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 Saturday, October 17th at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids where a visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s name may be directed to the Mayo Clinic, Dept. of Development to be used toward Amyloidosis research. John Douglas Morgan was born March 9, 1947, in Marshalltown, Iowa; son of M. Rolland and Harriet (Martin) Morgan. He graduated from Tama High School with the class of ’65 and went on to attend the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1970, and College of Dentistry, graduating in 1975. He married Gayle Grace on August 30, 1969 in Mattoon, IL. They spent a portion of their life together, traveling across the country while John served with the U.S. Public Health Service, settling in Cedar Rapids in 1982, where he would open his private practice in periodontics. John also served in the Iowa National Guard, retiring from the 294th Dental Det. as a Lieutenant Colonel. More recently he enjoyed his time teaching dental students at both Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa.

He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church and the Tuesday Evening Optimist Club. He will be remembered as a hardworking, loving, gentle-man, with a witty sense of humor; who enjoyed his time golfing, reading, camping and spending time with his family, and always delighted in time spent with his grandchildren, affectionately known to them as “Pops.”

His family includes his wife, Gayle; son, Brent Morgan and his wife, Becca of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Dawn Morgan of North Liberty; grandchildren, Thomas, John, Matthew, Tyler and Carter Morgan; siblings, James Morgan and his wife, Monique, Jerry Morgan, and Janis Swanson and her husband, Dennis; sister-in-law, Suzanne Bork and her husband, Byron, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his son, Reed, and his parents.
