Anna Blanch (Novy) Shimon, 97, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Karen Acres Care Center, Urbandale. A private mass service was held April 8 for the immediate family at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon.

Anna was born to John and Anna (Zachar) Novy on Nov. 24, 1917, in Solon. She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and Altar and Rosary Society. She worked for Brosh Chapel in Solon, where she greeted people with her warm smile and made them feel comfortable.

Ann was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother. She was a beautiful seamstress, loved gardening, canning, fishing and working in the timber along the Cedar River. Ann worked hard at everything she did and accomplished many activities with her hard work ethics. The highlight of her day was playing pinochle and euchre with her husband “Cookie” and sister and brother-in-law Len and Dave Stochl.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Charles “Cookie” Shimon, grandson Brian Bair, her parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

Ann is survived by her daughter Sally (John) Beretta of Urbandale; four grandchildren, Sherri (Gary) Sayre, Kris (Rex) Kelly, Amy (T.J.) McCarthy and Lynnette Beretta, (friend Dan Terrell), 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; nephew Dave (Joyce) Stochl, and many other nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to all the staff at Karen Acres Health Center in Urbandale, and to Gentiva Hospice for their attentiveness in taking care of Anna.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be donated to Karen Acres Health Center and Gentiva Hospice.
