Alfred Francis Scheetz was born August 30, 1929, in rural Oxford, the son of Jacob and Mary C. “Mattie” (McGinnis) Scheetz. He attended Oxford Schools graduating from Oxford High School in 1947. He then enlisted in the United States Army serving his country during the Korean Conflict. Returning home he later married Delores Ann Lazio on June 22, 1955, in Anamosa, Iowa. The couple settled in the Oxford area where they farmed and began a family. Alfred farmed for a number of years, then became a rural mail carrier for the Oxford area, and after retiring he helped deliver smiles for his daughter’s family business Heaven Scent Flowers and Gifts. He was most often the requested delivery person, and known for his smile. In fact the business slogan, “We deliver smiles” was Alfred at work!

He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, singing in the choir for years, serving on church counsel, and other activities of the church. It was noted recently that he and Delores have sung at over 500 weddings, this does not take into account funerals, anniversaries and other special events. Alfred was also active in the Oxford American Legion, having been a member for over 60 years, and also serving in various offices including commander over the years. But if you knew Alfred, and everybody did, you knew a man who would give you the shirt off his back, defend his country to those who thought differently, and would be the first to count his blessings to his Lord for his family, friends and community. There was never a day that he didn’t have a twinkle in his eyes and a smile on his face!

Alfred’s family includes the love of his life, Delores for over 60 years; their daughters, Michelle Montgomery (Deacon David), Marisa Coblentz (Jim), Manette Speers (Rick), Magina Scheetz, Maricarla Rohret (Bill) and Janice Scheetz; grandchildren, Lindsay Klienmeyer (Nick), Sean Montgomery, Quinn Montgomery, Genna Kramer (Mike), Brandon Speers (Angela), Jason Speers (Kassie), Justin Speers, Jacob Swenka (Carrie), Leah Moravec (Cody), Sheena Eister (Jesse), Josh Rohret and Joe Rohret and 11 great-grandchildren.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, John and Joseph Scheetz, grandson, Tony Coblentz; and 5 siblings, Joe, Don, Helen Stockman, Earle “Bud”, and Larry.

Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Alfred’s family and his services.
